SymplyATOM2 brings LTO tape tools to Windows

The free utility for supported Symply LTO products combines drive diagnostics, LTFS tools and firmware updates. Its Full Write test overwrites the entire tape.

On October 20, 2026, Symply announced general availability of SymplyATOM2, a utility for managing and diagnosing LTO tape drives. The successor to SymplyATOM runs on macOS and Windows and provides drive and media tools in a graphical interface.

Changes

  • Windows support. Symply's LTO tape tools, previously available on macOS, now run on Windows as well. The utility is free for supported Symply LTO products.
  • Functions in one utility. SymplyATOM2 combines drive diagnostics, firmware updates, and checking and repairing LTFS tape structures. LTFS, the Linear Tape File System, is a file system for LTO tape. Separate backup or archive software handles backup scheduling, archive catalogues, and how long data is kept.

Full Write destroys existing tape contents

Full Write overwrites the entire tape with test data to detect problems with the media surface. It destroys existing contents, so Symply specifies its use only with a blank tape or one ready to be erased. This is a media test, not a check of preserved archive files.

System and drive compatibility

The utility supports LTO-6 through LTO-10 drives in compatible Symply products. It runs on macOS 14 or later and Windows 10 or 11. On Windows 10, IBM LTFS SDE 2.4.5.1, the driver used for LTFS, does not support LTO-10.

For Windows 10 users who installed SymplyATOM2 2.0.2, Symply specifies running the full 2.1.0 installer. It selects a compatible LTFS driver; an in-app update does not change that driver.
