MSI XA52P Review

Audio CD read test
Audio CD read test
In this test we use a medium called CD-CHECK, specially prepared by Digital Recordings company. Some damages were made on pressed CD - see picture below.

Successive levels : The higher damage level is read properly, the better is the test result.

Level
Damage
size
Description
P1 Acceptable amount of errors, according to 'red book'. This amount is typical - if drive is unable to read this area, that means this drive is damaged
P2 0.375 mm Mediocre SR/EC (Sound Reproduction/Error Correction) mechanism
P3 0.750 mm Good SR/EC mechanism
P4 1.125 mm Very good SR/EC mechanism
P5 1.500 mm Excellent SR/EC result. A drive that can read correctly this area is able to read practically every audio CD.

The green line on the graph below shows the reading speed of an audio CD. When we compare this line with the damage distribution on the CD, we are able to analyze the way and time of drive reaction to detect damages. The more we use our drive, the worse is getting its SR/EC.

Dictionary:
Błędy - Errors
Całość - Total
Maksimum - Maximum
Średnio - Average

Comparison of CD Check results for combo drives. The higher test result, the better drive

Another test that can be used to estimate the SR/EC mechanism quality is the use of a medium created with DAE Quality software. The test is to read a damaged Audio CD with the maximum available speed and without any software error correction.

Comparison of DAEQuality test results for combo drives. The higher test result, the better drive:

Exact Audio Copy (EAC) 0.95 prebeta 5 version, is a software designed for ripping and recording audio CDs. When we start EAC, the program detects the following reading options:

Dictionary:
Buforowanie - Caching
Dokładny strumień - Accurate stream
Informacje o błedach C2 - C2 Error info
Tak - Yes
Nie - No

With EAC we have the possibility to read audio CD in two modes: 'secure' and 'burst'. The first mode is slower because the program tries to correct reading errors. In the second case, EAC reads CD without software error correction, thus it is much faster. The cost of using faster burst mode is that the quality of ripped material can be worse. This quality strongly depends on the drive and its error correction mechanism. Below you can see EAC screenshots. Screenshots were taken after reading in burst and in secure mode. In the red rectangles on the pictures you can see the speed of audio data extraction. After recalculating those speeds to bit rates (1x=150 kbps) we could draw comparison plots that compare different drives. Scores of MSI XA52P were distinguished with different color.

In order to check if our drive manages to copy protected audio CDs we used the following CDs:

Natalie Imbruglia - White Lilies Island
